What is a LIGHT game?

Research shows that student-athletes face tremendous pressure - on the field, in the classroom, and within themselves. Yet too many struggle in silence, believing they need to "tough it out" rather than ask for help.

SL24's LIGHT Games provide an opportunity to change that narrative. These events encourage meaningful conversations about mental health, empower students to share their stories, and help break down the stigma that often prevents young people from seeking support. Through our experience, we've found that sporting events provide a powerful platform to connect with students and families, share resources, and reach those who may benefit from our services.

We are excited to offer two different versions of SL24 LIGHT games... spotLIGHT and candleLIGHT.

A spotLIGHT Game is a full partnership between your school and SL24 that combines mental health awareness programming with an on-site SL24 presence. Before the game, a mental health awareness program is held to shine a light on the importance of mental wellness and may include the National Anthem, an SL24 video, student speakers from each team, and a speaker from SL24. Faith-based schools may also choose to include an opening prayer if they are the home team.

For spotLIGHT games, SL24 creates customized spotLIGHT warm-up shirts or helmet stickers for participating athletes, sets up a table with mental health resources, SL24 merch and information about Sean’s House and SL24: UnLocke The Light. spotLIGHT Games create an engaging atmosphere that encourages conversation, raises awareness, and connects students, families, and communities with mental health resources and support.

A candleLIGHT Game offers schools a meaningful way to support mental health awareness when an on-site SL24 presence is not needed or possible. While these events are led by the school, they still provide an opportunity to educate, raise awareness, and share resources with students and community members.

For candleLIGHT Games, SL24 provides prepared remarks to be delivered by a designated school representative, an SL24 video presentation for schools with video board capabilities, mental health resource brochures, postcards with QR codes for donations and merchandise purchases, and an SL24 gift basket to raffle during the game. Although SL24 staff and volunteers are not present, candleLIGHT Games still help shine a light on youth mental health and support young people who may be facing mental health challenges.
